Tucson Mennonite Voluntary Service

Build Community | Serve & Lead | Explore Faith & Vocation

Tucson Mennonite Voluntary Service is a volunteer program where participants live together in a house and serve a local nonprofit for one-two years.

Nestled between four mountain ranges and buzzing with the energy of a university city, Tucson offers enriching service opportunities with the enchanting Sonoran Desert as its backdrop.

Volunteers have worked repairing homes for low-income communities, teaching English literacy, and growing gardens with the community food bank — and so much more — all while learning about issues surrounding the borderlands and indigenous people.

Community.

As part of the Tucson Voluntary Service Unit, you will live in a house sharing meals and household responsibilities as well as mutually supporting one another. The unit house is located next door to Shalom Mennonite Fellowship who, along with housemates, will be part of your community.

Vocation & Gifts.

Placements at local Tucson nonprofit organizations give you a chance to develop skills, build professional relationships, and gain valuable work experience that can help you explore your vocation and help in your future career path. Through your service placement and through community living, you’ll experience the challenge and joy of personal and spiritual growth.

Social Justice.

Tucson’s location, close to the Mexican border, and neighboring the land of the Tohono O’odham Nation, creates a unique opportunity to learn about issues surrounding both migrant and indigenous populations. Our location in the Sonoran Desert places creation care directly in our sights. A diverse population makes antiracism work vitally important.

“I originally thought I’d do something like engineering, but through my placement, helping to repair people’s homes, I learned that I enjoy doing things with people and value relationships and serving people .”

— Josh Schlabach, MVSer from 2014 - 2016
