About Tucson MVS

Tucson MVS program aims to cultivate community, faith, and connection in our local unit through service, faith, and cross-cultural understanding.

More about our program:

  • The Tucson MVS program was founded by snowbird Mennonites in the early 1970’s to spread shalom through the Tucson community.

  • Members of the Tucson MVS unit live together in our unit house which shares a campus with Shalom Mennonite Fellowship and CHRPA (Community Home Repair Projects of Arizona).

  • The unit follows the Mennonite Voluntary Service commitment to a lifestyle of faith, simplicity, and justice.  Intentional Christian community is encouraged within the house, and in the larger community.  Each member takes part fully in the daily activities of cooking, cleaning, and upkeep of the house.  Weekly and monthly meetings are seen as opportunities for conducting business and for the mutual sharing and support that is necessary for building close communities.

  • Each MVS participant serves between 32-36 hours a week at a local nonprofit or community organization. Volunteers are placed in a wide variety of positions, for one or two year terms, serving low-income people, immigrants/refugees, people living on the streets, or other underserved populations.

  • The volunteer house is supported locally by part-time Local Program Coordinators and a volunteer committee made up of local church members, former volunteers or other community members.
